“Besides being a very bright student, Vishnu has always been a very caring and responsible boy. Sometimes he would sneak out of the house at 3 in the morning to help a friend in need, or help his mother with household chores when she fell sick. He is a darling among his friends and family. I still can't believe that something this terrible could ever happen to a boy like him. I cannot question fate, but I am convinced that his good deeds will not go in vain. I will leave no stone unturned to help my boy get back on his feet.”
On 13th January 2019, upon hearing that his friends have met with an accident, 18-year-old Vishnu Shibu, an engineering student who hails from Kothamagalam (Kochi), wasted no time in hopping on the pillion seat of his friend’s scooter, to inform the parents of the boys involved in the mishap. Little did he know that before he could do that, his own parents would have to be informed about the tragedy that had befallen him. Vishnu was riding pillion with Appu when they were hit by a speeding truck coming from the wrong side and were dragged under it. In a tragic twist of fate, Appu lost his life on the spot and Vishnu suffered near-fatal injuries.
“When I saw him in the hospital I just froze with fear. I really hoped that it was all just a nightmare and I would wake up soon, only to be brought back to my senses when I heard horrible words like ‘fatal’, ‘chest-column damage’, ‘fractured spine’, ‘internal injuries to intestine and kidneys’ from the team of doctors around him”
In a critical condition, Vishnu was admitted to a nearby medical college’s emergency ward. When his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Rajagiri hospital, Kochi where he underwent multiple surgeries, to mend his wounded body and heavily damaged organs. Throughout this time, the family went through an emotional roller-coaster as complications due to his multiple injuries kept throwing fresh challenges for the doctors. He slipped into a coma just a week after the accident and has suffered two cardiac arrests since then. His damaged kidneys mean that he also needs sustained dialysis support.
“As a child, he wouldn't leave my side no matter what. I had to sometimes scold him for being constantly in my way while I did my chores. Now, I can't control my tears while reliving those memories, as he lay motionless and unable to even smile back at me. But I have realized that it's now my turn to not leave his side until he recovers and becomes his normal self.”
A ray of hope for the family
In the past few weeks, the family’s prayers have been answered as Vishnu is showing positive signs of recovery and the doctors are optimistic that with proper medical care he can fully recover to his normal self. But just as the family is beginning to see a small ray of hope after a long and hard struggle, their dwindling finances have become a source of concern at the worst possible time. As per doctors’ estimate, the total cost of his treatment could go upwards of Rs. 25 lakh. Being the sole breadwinner of the family, Shibu’s meager earning as a construction worker is barely enough to provide for the family, leave alone cover the staggering cost of Vishnu’s treatment. His friends and relatives are rallying to his aid to gather as much funds as they can as quickly as they can. But the amount is huge and time is running out.
How you can help?
A fatal accident has left my son critically injured. He is gradually coming out of a coma and needs sustained medical care for some time to come. We have depleted all our savings and whatever we are able to arrange is falling way too short to cover his treatment. We need your urgent financial support to save our only son.
